Dutch lessons for expat teenagers to overcome judgment. In the Netherlands, tweens and teenagers are judged by their level of Dutch. It is harsh, but it is happening because the assessment in the Netherlands is still very Dutch language-based. Furthermore, schools don’t have enough budget for the right education or for teachers to help international children thrive in the Dutch education system.
I was flabbergasted. My son is advanced in all subjects.
A mother from the USA, 47 years old, told me the following during our first meeting: ‘’The teacher told me that he was not smart enough for vwo. I was flabbergasted. He is advanced in math, world history, and writing. Yes, in English, but the level is high. He just started learning Dutch a half year ago, so what do you expect? I disagree. I want my son at least starting on the level of havo/vwo.’’
Sadly, if you think this is an exceptional example, I must disappoint you. There are still many Dutch schools that are not open to multilingual children, schools where children are tested more on language than on other parts. For example, the ‘beruchte’ Cito-toets is very language-based. And so it can easily be that your bright child who would thrive in your country, getting himself ready for university, starts here in secondary school at a much lower level.

Dutch Lessons for expat teenagers: How to help your child succeed and tackle judgment
- Build up more confidence in the new language; Extra help with Dutch lessons
- Joining Dutch hobbies, sports, and clubs in your neighborhood, following Dutch TV programs, and letting him/her listen to Dutch podcasts for children.
- Keep the topic alive: talk with your teenager about cultural differences, different perspectives towards multilingual upgrading, etc. It will help him or her hear your experience and point of view. Read a book together about these topics, for example, Third Culture Kids by David C. Pollock and Ruth E. Van Reken.
- Please encourage your child to keep asking for explanations of words and sentences: let him/her know that the only way to get other people to help them is by asking
Teenagers who move to another country can be extra sensitive to peer pressure, cultural pressure, and judgment, even subtle ones. The Culture Shock in Children is the hidden heartache of moving abroad with kids.
