Group vs. private Dutch lessons for expat children: Which One is Best? As a parent raising an expat child in the Netherlands, you want them to feel confident in Dutch. But what’s the best way to help them learn? Should they join a group class, or would private lessons be more effective? Each approach has its advantages and challenges. In this guide, we’ll explore the benefits and challenges of both options to help you make the best choice for your child. We rely on educational theories, practice, and experience.
Private Dutch lessons for expat children: Personalized learning at your child’s pace
Private Dutch lessons offer one-on-one guidance fully tailored to your child’s level, learning style, and goals. This individualized attention allows for faster progress and a more flexible learning experience. This will enable them to develop their language skills more quickly and confidently.
Group vs. private Dutch lessons: Benefits of private lessons
✔️ Customized learning – Lessons are adapted to your child’s needs, pace, and interests.
✔️ More speaking time – Since your child is the only student, they get to practice Dutch much more.
✔️ Faster progress – Focused, intensive lessons lead to quicker learning.
✔️ Pronunciation improvement – The teacher can provide focused correction and support.
✔️ Reduced speaking anxiety – No fear of making mistakes in front of others.
✔️ Flexible scheduling – Choose the day and time best for your family’s routine.
✔️ More lessons per week – If needed, private lessons can be scheduled multiple times weekly.
✔️ Immediate start – No need to wait for a new course cycle to begin.
Challenges of private lessons
✔️ Less social interaction – Your child won’t meet other kids learning Dutch. But, we at Dutch for Children prepare and preteach them for social interaction with classmates or sports buddies.
✔️ No comparison to peers – Some children find motivation in seeing how others learn.
✔️ More expensive – Private lessons are usually more expensive than group classes.

Group Dutch lessons for expat children: Learning together is fun
Group Dutch lessons provide an interactive and social learning experience, allowing children to learn from both their teacher and peers. This can make language learning more enjoyable and natural.
Group vs. private Dutch lessons: Benefits of group lessons
✔️ Social learning – Kids meet and connect with others learning Dutch. If you are interested in the theory behind this, please also read our recent article about group lessons.
✔️ Shared focus – The attention isn’t always on them, although more than four children never follow our group lessons. This is to keep u engagement and focus.
✔️ Motivating group energy – Learning in a group helps maintain enthusiasm and commitment.
✔️ Diverse conversations – Peers bring different experiences and stories into the lessons.
✔️ More affordable – Group lessons cost less than private sessions.
Challenges of group lessons
✔️ Fixed pace – The class moves at the average speed of the group, which may be slower for some children.
✔️ Less individual speaking time – Everyone needs a turn, so your child may practice speaking less. Although we have a maximum of four children in our group lessons.
✔️ Less flexibility – Group lessons follow a set schedule that might not always fit your child’s routine.

Group vs. private Dutch lessons: How to choose the right option?
If you’re unsure whether group or private lessons are better for your child, consider these questions:
🔹 How quickly does my child need to learn Dutch? If speed is a priority (e.g., for school integration, an upcoming move, or a test), private lessons are the best option.
🔹 What is the age of your child? Our groups start at the age of 6 years old. Children before that age need the full attention of the teacher, and if your child is three or four years old we start to teach with you as a parent. If you would like to learn more about how we do that, please visit this page.
🔹 Does my child enjoy social learning? If they like working with others and thrive in a team environment, group lessons will be more engaging.
🔹 How much time can we dedicate to lessons? If your child has limited availability, private lessons offer more flexibility and are most effective. Group lessons have fixed schedules, usually on weekday afternoons.
🔹 What is our budget? Group lessons are more affordable, while private lessons are more intensive and customized but cost more.
🔹 Does my child need extra support? Private lessons provide the necessary focus and structure if your child struggles with learning languages or has specific goals, such as preparing for an NT2 exam, getting better at comprehensive reading, or expanding his vocabulary and confidence to speak.
