Personalized Dutch Lessons for multilingual and expat kids have so many benefits. When it comes to learning a new language, every child is unique. This is especially true for international and expat children learning the Dutch language! Their life experiences, exposure to language, and academic levels often don’t match the standard classroom model. At Dutch for Children, we believe personalized learning is not just a nice option, but it’s essential. Whether your child is catching up, reading ahead, or struggling with Dutch vocabulary, our tailored lessons meet them where they are. In this blog, we explain what personalized learning is, why it matters for multilingual families, and how we make it work for children from all over the world.

So we are looking for a provider that does not offer a single age or group package. Our children are immediately assigned to a Dutch primary school group based on age, even though this does not suit them. I can’t find anything suitable.

One expat family, two Kids, two paths: How tailored Dutch lessons make a difference

This week, I listened to an Dutch expat mother who has been living in the UK with her family for some time and is preparing to return to the Netherlands. Her youngest is ready to learn to read, and her eldest has some catching up, particularly in sentence structure and spelling. In addition, the youngest can no longer follow everything when Dutch is spoken quickly about a subject for which she does not yet have sufficient vocabulary. On the other hand, the eldest has never stopped reading and amazes her parents time and again with her extensive Dutch vocabulary.

This is just one of the many examples from our practice of children we meet who are learning Dutch. This is exactly why Dutch for Children provides tailor-made lessons that look beyond the age groups prescribed in the Netherlands. This also applies to international expat children.

These children always have a higher level of education than their language level, which is logical because very few countries teach Dutch as a subject.

From Ghana to the Netherlands: Nana’s Journey through personalized learning

For example, I met Nana* from Ghana who did not speak a word of Dutch when she started language school in the Netherlands. She is a brilliant lady, but her initial advice was to go to VMBO (preparatory secondary vocational education), even though her academic level in other subjects is VWO (pre-university education). We worked hard on this, of course, and she has now been accepted into HAVO/VWO (senior general secondary education/pre-university education).

Children are more than their second or third language. We like to take advantage of this. We encourage multilingualism, and children draw on different sources to learn a new language.

An important motivating factor is the enthusiasm of those around them to learn Dutch well. We are happy to contribute to this by teaching in a way that stimulates and motivates them to actively use Dutch. Stimulation, encouragement, and praise from home and the living environment are often underestimated.

Our approach at Dutch for Children: Explaining tailor-made lessons

We are regularly asked how exactly we personalise these lessons. Thanks to our professionalism, knowledge, and experience with the core objectives of the Dutch language, we can design lessons that match the experiences of your child, teenager, or young adult.

Our teachers are all Dutch and qualified in the Netherlands, trained to teach children. Our team also has expertise in the areas of dyslexia, dyscalculia, and autism.

Moving forward in learning, but also taking a step back when necessary, because the basics are essential. We are always adapting to the age-related interests of the student.

Customised online Dutch lessons are exactly what they say. They are lessons tailored to the student, made to measure for the student. In short, an online Dutch lesson at Dutch for Children is unique for every child.

We adapt our teaching process to the goals and wishes set. This means that we carefully consider the learning method, the goal, and the resources we use. We also consider the student who wants to achieve this goal. During the lessons, level, motivation, interests, learning style, and living environment are decisive factors.
